EMPLOYMENT BY CHINESE (Per Press Association). Auckland, Sept. 6. In response to numerous requests by members of the Maori race, backed' up by considerable public opinion the Government lias appointed a .committee to investigate the employment of Maori girls by Chinese i(u Auckland <and the surrounding districts. The commlittee, the members of which are Dr. J. T. Hughes, Medical Officer of Health at Auckland, chairman; Messrs W. Slaughter representing the Labour Department ; and Tukere Te Anga, representing the Native Department,- will hear preliminary evidence at the offices of the Health Department today. The sittings will be continued to-morrow and on Saturday. An almost entire absence of publicity has marked the setting up of the committee. The matter was considered by Cabinet, and it was stated that a.u inquiry would be held but very short notice was given of the personnel of the committee and the order of reference. The inquiry will not be open to the Press.
