MEETING OF ITS COUNCIL. 1)G81NE88 DEALT' WITH The monthly meeting of the Kiwitea County Council was held at Kimbolton yesterday, Cr. L. T. McLean presiding over Crs. J. A. T. Brown, W. Hair. X. V. Shannon, W. P. Shaw, F. u. Stuck, J. H. Williamson, D. L. Younger and the county clerk, Mr W. L. Ilesseltine. From the Assistant Cmler-Secre-tary. Department, of Internal Affairs, forwarding extract from the New Zealand Gazette containing regulations prescribing the rates of travelling allowances payable to members’ of County Councils.—Deceived. Some discussion took place on the allowances provided for members resident near the place of meetings, but it was found that these members may he sufliiciently compensated for time spent in county works. From Mr X. C. Kevern. complaining of the inconvenience caused by the slip on the Mangapapu road. — Attended to and the road now clear. From Mr J. G. At a special meeting of the Council held at noon a special order was passed declaring Wednesday the day on which shops and offices in the .county shall observe the statutory half-holi-day. This is not departure from previous years. OUTSTANDING DATES The treasurer (Mr Ilesseltine) submitted a compreuhensive .statement dealing with the position of oulslamjing county rates. Tho general rates struck for 192728 amounted to £11,204 17s lod, of which at date of meeting £6580 ISs Id (.Including-rebate) had been paid, leaving outstanding £4023 19s 9J. Special rates struck totalled £2720 7s 2d and £1303 Is 2d had been paid, leaving Jl balance still, to come In of £1417 Gs.

Referring to the rating for 192(1-27 general rates outstanding at March 31 last was £450 1.5 s 7d, of which £433 Us 4d hiVI since been paid, leaving outstanding £l7 4s Bd. Special rates in arrears amounted to £92 ss, of Avliieh £f)o Ids 8d had been paid, leaving a balance of £1 8s Id.

Regarding arrears of previous years outstanding general rates rales amounted to £O(S 8s ,4d, special £7 10,s 4d. General rales £23 4s Gd and special £2 5s Hid had been paid off since March 84 last, leaving amounts of £4B 8s 8d and. £5 4s Gd respectively to be received.

HIDING EXPENDITURE Acquainting riding members of the amount of revenue available for expenditure up to the close of the llnancial year (March 31) as from December 3J. last, the following statement was considered : In tho Cheltenham Hiding account the overseer’s estimate for the year was £1205 and at December 31 the amount of £874 2s Id had been expended, leaving in hand for the remaining quarter £330 I7s lid. Chcseldine’s application for the renewal of liis billiard saloon license was granted. On the motion of the chairman, seconded by Cr. Younger,- it was resolved that tenders be called for the delivery of 400 yards of screened metal on the Pakillikura road, tenders to be received up to February 10 next. Tenders were to be called for the delivery of 400 yards of fine metal on Haynes’ line, tenders to be received by next meeting of the Couucil. — Moved by Cr. Younger, seconded by Cr. Williamson. It was to be a condition that metal be supplied from the Kiwitea stream. The offer of Shannon Bros, to purelia.se clay pipes, taken from'culverts in the Waituna district, at 3s Gd each, was accepted. The pipes were not now required for any purpose iu the county. Mr T. .Stewart was granted permission to lay a water pipe across tho Otara road fronting his property, the work to he executed to the satisfaction of the overseer and, during the pleasure of the Council. The action of Cr. Hair and Ihf overseer in accepting tlie tender of I'. I. Morphy (Foilding) lor kerbing and channeling footpaths in lvimbolton for the sum of £4 7s Gd per chain and the construction of slab crossings at, x ss per lineal foot was confirmed. On the motion of Cr. ITair, seconded by Cr. Younger, it was decided that the contractor for the kerbing

and channeling be paid 75 per cent, of the amount of his tender upon completion of the work and further that approximately liine chains of the footpath on the western side of tiie township he kerbed and channeled on the same conditions us the present contract. Cr. Hair and tho overseer were empowered to purchase on behalf of the Council a concrete water trough. The tender of G. A. Bailey for the lease of reserve lit Ilawuenga at £5 per annum rental was accepted. Accounts totalling £BO4 12s 1(1 were passed for payment.
