RELATIVITY
DR, DAYTON MILLER’S
CRITICISM
A Christchurch physicist forwards the lollowing note on 1 the cable message, which appeared in Thursday’s issue, detailing Dr. Dayton Miller's criticisms of Einstein’s relativity theory:— In view of the accuracy with which Pro lessor Einstein’s calculations show the actually observed amount of the accoeration of the perihelion of the planet Mercury, and tile equal verification ol bis calculations in regard to the refraction of light by an intense gravitational field as measured during two eclipses of the sun, physicists will generally be very critical ol the claims of Dr. Dayton Miller to have measured the rate of progression ol the earth and solar system through (be other . ft must, however, be borne in mind that Dr. Einstein himself recognised the necessity of a modification of his second postulate, and that lie also showed the necessary for a modification of the theory that the velocity of light must be assumed a constant. The arrival ol Dr. Miller’s detailed paper will lie awaited with interest by ali physicists, but it would be wrong to think that any advance whatever in the way of a knowledge of The truth would be unacceptable to Dr. Einstein, So much mathematics and physics lias been, since based upon Dr. Einstein’s work that it seems almost incredible that the critical examination of Lfi'/ world’s must expert mathematicians could have failed to detect any error in liisj work.
