MAYOR, DESPITE HER FATHER

Aliss Lucy .Dales, the only woman member of *tbo lDu us table Low u Council (England) accepted an invitation to become the now mayor. Tile only member to vote, against lier was her lather, Alderman J. T. Dales, who states that he will oppose her at the formal mayoral election.

Alderman Dales, who was. himself mayor sis. years ago, said in an inter view: “1 voted against my daughter out of sympathy for herself, as 1 consider that she has already as much responsibility in business and at home as a. normal woman can carry. I fear that her health would not stand the strain of the mayoralty. 1 would no be* mayor again on any account.’ ’

Miss Dales was returned at the head of the pool in her ward for the third time* in six yjears. in her first year on the council she acted as mayoress for her father, who is a widower. No woman has yet been both, mayor and mayoress of the same English borough.
