A T TIIE T All ;r EA X N GAM ES BEST ROl'T OF THE SERIES London, Aug. 7. C. Purdy defeated “Paddy O’Dwycr on points in the filial contest of the welterweights at the Tailtcaii games. Not since the Siki-MeTigue .light two years ago has there been so much interest shown in a fight in Dublin. Thousands were unable to gain admission. The expectations raised by Purdy's showing in the preliminary rounds on Monday were more than fulfilled. His victory was gained by sheer cleverness. The referee, leading Purdy forward at the conclusion said: “J have never seen a, cleverer boy." The bouse ruse and made a remarkable demonstration. Although his wrist was strained, and be gave away pounds, Purdy opened aggressively. O’Dwyer was swinging wildly to the bead, but Purdy proved too elusive. The second round was a repetition of the first. Purdy lauded with his right and left alternately. The bout ended as it began. Purdy won. on pure science. Colonel "Walter Scott, an American millionaire, presented Purdy with bis medal at the conclusion of the other events. The fact that .Purdy won the welter division instead of the light one will come as a surprise to (hose who ki ew him, as before lie Jett .Auckland lie was well within the lightweight limit. No doubt the change ol climate and food have built him up to the heavier division. He must have put ' n a h t of weight, as last year he boxed as featherweight.
