Drinking heavily to -drown his sorrows, he excites her sympathy and she tries to make him reform. Then Kate and her fiancee, Loveridge, arrive. The latter recognises Silverton as Bradbury, and wires for a New York detective, who arrives just as frantic messages reach Marlow that the little town of Cleeves is hemmed in hy fire.
