The agitation in favour of a- Republic collapsed owing to the opposition of the clergy and public. Many hostile speeches were delivered to large crowds outside Parliament, which was sitting to determine the form of Government. It was decided to depose the Shall, who is at present in Paris, and his son, aged two, succeeds him. A regent will he appointed.
