FOUL DRIVING: POINTED COMMENT. Christchurch, May 16. “Argus” in the Star says: The remarks made by Mr H. F. Nicoll at the meeting of the New Zealand Trotting Association on the subject of foul driving have met with general approval in sporting circles. The warning was not uttered too soon, as foul driving, deliberate or accidental, has been all too prevalent in various parts of the Dominion this season. It was, of course, only a coincidence that the indictment of trotting officials and horsemen was uttered on the eve of the Ashburton County ! Racing Club’s meeting, of which club Mr Nicoll is vice-president, that the meeting furnished evidence of the soundness of his complaint so far as both branches of the sport 1 are concerned. In one of the trotting events there was a good deal of interference,. some of it doubtless accidental, but some due to deliberately unfair tactics of the worst kind. Apparently it was done so cleverly as to escape official notice, while the sufferers, as usual, refrained from making any complaints, preferring to await favourable opportunity for evening up accounts later on in their own way. This method of retaliation means, of course, a- repetition of the offence, which the authorities are out to put a stop to, and it is one which should be discountenanced at once. At the same time it is a system vhich has grown up as a result of inefficient official control.

NOTES AND COMMENTS. Tigrinia was unplaced with 7.0 in tho Flying Handicap at Canterbury Park (Australia) on May 6. On the same clay Alolyneux, 9.5, was a good second favourite in the Canterbury Handicap (11 miles 100 yards), but the best he could do was to finish second'" to the favourite, Llanthony, 7.10. George Price, until recently in charge of the Highden establishment, and how holiday-making in Australia, was interviewed by a Sydney pressman. His comment on New Zealand horses was as follows: “Gloaming makes everything he meets look cheap, and if he makes a noise it is slight. Amythas is a marvellously good horse but gets very sore, and that would tell against him if he met Gloaming at a mile and a half. The latter goes much more kindly in his races than he used. The Hawk is brilliant, but little can be said about him one way or the other ns a stayer, as he has never really been trained for a distance. Winning Hit is tao hard a puller to be a first class stayer. Thespian, a fine looking colt, and Gasbag and Grotesque are also good. The two-year-old Rapine strikes me as likely to make a rattling three-year-old. He is one of whom I have a very high opinion.” Kihvn, a six-year-old brown gelding by Kilbroney from Divinia and bred by Mr J. B. Reid at Oaniaru, won the Victoria Park Handicap in Sydney on May 10. A Melbourne message says that tho entries for the Grand National Hurdle Race total 78, and for the Grand National Steeplechase 66. Locheila and Koliu are included in both.

R. Lewis, the Victorian horseman, lias a marvellous record in Australian classic events, and at the recent S.A.J.C. meeting lie rode his seventh winner of the S.A.J.C. .St Leger on King Ingoda by Comedy/ King from Ingodn, the latter a mare who won races in New Zealand for the late Mr Duncan Rutherford.
