Owing to the Federal arbitration award bringing the wages of builders’ labourers within 7e of the carpenters’ wages, tlie master builders have decided to dispense with the former and employ carpenters, excepting in cases of pick and shovel men. Mr F. A. McKenzie, President of the Pastures Protection Board, at the annual convention, said the industry was favoured by a good average season, and tho like anxiety which existed was dispelled b the March rainfall, though prospects in the west and north-west wore not bright. The depression in the meat market was reflected in tho cattle market, and brought 1 ' down the value of stud stock and all classes of breeding animals. A ray of sunshine permeated the wool sales. It is thought the Manurewa should havo encountered tlio same winds. The suggestion has been made that a seaplane shoidd search in case the vessel is disabled and out of the ■ track of other vessels. Brisbane, May 18. Of nine cases of children admitted to hospital with the mysterious brain disease, seven have proved fatal. The condition of one is most serious, but the other remaining one is likely to recover. -
