AUSTRALIA’S DEFENCE
CUTTING DOWN EXPENSES. DUE TO PACIFIC’S PEACE. (By Electric Cable—Copyright. (Aust. and N.Z. Cabler Association.' (Received May 17, 9 a.m.) Melbourne, May 17. Tlie official military view of the defence retrenchment scheme is tftiat the Government has framed its proposals wisely, afid that the promise of tho peace in the Pacific has materially reduced the obligations of tlie Commonwealth to build up an expensive military organisation. The Ministry has been guided bytwo facts: First, tho prospect of at least 10 years’ peace in tho Pacific; and, second, the imperative demand for economy. The Ministry has cut its coat- according to its cloth, and has decided to abandon alt appearances which might show ail offensive instead of a defensive attitude.
