N.Z. FEDERATION OF LABOUR.

THE COMING CONFERENCE

SOME STARTLING REMITS,

(Per Prcan. association.)

AVellington, June 23. The conference of the New Zealand Federation of Labour is to open in | Wellington on July 3. A number ot iutcresting remits will be considered. A remit from the Auckland Carpenters' Union proposes the formation of a Workmen's and Soldiors' Council to deal with the problem of Repatriation. The Union is of opinion that the Returned Soldiers' Association would welcome the idea, thus making it possible to form such council. 'The Auckland Coachworkers' Union sends a remit as fololws:—"That in the event of the Labour Party being returned to power all war. loans bo repudiated." Many iuneiidtucnts to the Shops and Offices Act are urged by tho Wellington Froccrs' Assistants' Union. They desire a forty-four hour week. Other remits deal with compulsory voting and referendum, speculation iii land, land nationalisation, and Labour's attitude in the matter of Defence. Of four AA'ellington delegates to the conference, three were elected fi+om wht is said to be the moderate section—Messrs J. Read, R. Mclvcen, and F. Cornwall. The other delegate selected was Mr Eraser, ALP. Under- an amendment adopted by the last conference the selection of delegates is limited to Labour representation committees. It is said there were two tickets in the field in Wellington Centre, one nominated by what is regarded as. tlie extreme section, and the other "by the moderates. The' new method of selection is not generally approved. Remits aimed at a reversion to the old method of selecting candidates havo been forwarded by the local Social Democratic Party and the Wellington North Labour Party.
