CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

FEILDING'S ANNUAL REPORT.

The following is tho annual report of the Feilding Chamber of Commerce, just issued to members:—

Tho Chamber has held four general and three special general meetings during the year, various matters in relation to war conditions having been brought forward with tho' object and effect of utilising the organisation of the Chamber to assist as far as possible \n war work. At one of the special meetings, Mr. Guthrie, M.P., addressed the Chamber on the National Efficiency Scheme. There was a large attendance, and as a result the Chamber secured the nomination of three of its members, Messrs G. Bartholomew, E. J. Wackrill, and J. AY. Bramwell, to the local Board of Trustees under the scheme. Mr. J. Stevens, chairman of the Palmerston North National Efficiency Trustee Board, visited the Chamber and addressed a special meeting on the work of the Board, with special reference to liquor sale control in war time. The Chamber was represented by Mr Toiley and the Secretary at tho 1916 Conference of Chambers of Commerce in Wellington, where our remit re shipping Was passed as modified, and also by Mr. Toiley at, the hydro-elec-tric deputation to the Minister of Public Works. In connection with this last matter a census of the probable requirements of the town in respect of electric power was taken by a sub-com-mittee of the Chamber appointed for that purpose. During the year the President, Mr. J. McQueen, resigned from the Chamber, the effective membership of which now stands at including Messrs. S. M. Hobbs. W. Odgers and B. N. Sandilands, who are on active service. It is very desirable that organised effort should bo made to secure niore members, so as to make the Chamber more fully representative of the business interests of the town. At present many of our business men are not members of the Chamber, hut could probably be induced to join. So far it has not been possible to induce members to take up this canvassing work. It is also desirable that the incoming Committee should proceed with the .preparation of a new set of rules.' those at present in existence being unsnited to the actual requirements of the Chamber. The shunting nuisance at Kimbolton road crossing has been ' considerably abated during the wear. The thanks of the Chamber are due to the Postal \ and Railway officials and also to the Feilding Star for courtesies during the year. The Chamber's receipts and payments account for the year shows a balance of £5 10s 7d. with £9 5s subscriptions outstanding, and all accounts paid to date.
