CONFERENCE IN FEILDING

The W.C.T.U. Provincial Convention was hold in St. Paul's Hall, on September 5. Mrs Crabbe (President) was in the chair, and 28 delegates from all parts of the Wellington province were present, also several visitors. Mrs Beattio welcomed the visitois to Feilding. Mrs Crabbe gave, as her opening address, a line paper <iv "EfUc'eiicy," and afterwards moved the following resolution, which was carried: "That th"s convention wishes to show their appreciation of the findings of the Efficiency Board as represented 111 their report sent in to the Government, especially dealing with the liquor traffic, and to ask the Government to put into force at once their recommendation to close down the sale of intoxicating liquors on effieiencv measures during the war and afterwards; failing this, to give the people an opportunity to express their wishes at a referendum." 'Tiie Convention strongly protested against rum raiion.s being served out to soldiers" in camp, and suggests that hot soup or cocoa he substituted; and als3 urges the Government not to encourage boys of 19 years of age to enlist. Regarding more up-to-date temperance wall sheets, the Convention suggested that all unions able to do so should present a complete chart to each school.—Carried. The Convention decided that the N.Z. W.C.T.U. executive be asked to consider whether they can formulate a scheme whereby girls can be trained in orchard work, bee culture, horticulture, poultry raising, etc., oh-the lines of work that the women are doing in Great Britain. Regarding a resolution that wherever women cooks have been employed their employment has resulted in better cooking and greater economy, tha Convention urged that the Government consider the advisability of employing women cooks in all camps, and also suggests that it is desirable that all women selected for women cooks or police women bo selected by women. Several other resolutions dealing with tho work of the Convention were passed. A vote of thanks was accorded the ladies of Feilding for their hospitality and to tho Church Committee for use of hall. The meeting was closed with the Benediction.
