Miss B. Bryant, assistant teacher at Kelvin Grove, has resigned her position. Mr. D. H. Guthrie, M.P., who was a visitor to Feilding for the weekend, returned to his Parliamentary duties to-day. Mr L. B. Jordan, of the Government Audit Department, has suffered a breakdown in health, and has, under medical advice, received three months' leave of absence. News wa.s received in Paimerston last evening that Mrs S. R. Lancaster, of Aokautere, died during the day. She had been ailing for some time past. She was a Wairarapa lady. A meeting of delegates of the Political Reform League branches throughout the Otaki electorate decided, by a majority of 14 to 1, to support Mr AY. H. Field's candidature for the Otaki seat. Mr Alfred Gyles, the well-known Wellington chess player, who was touring in England at the outbreak of war, lias joined the 2nd City of London Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps, and is now probably at the front.

It is interesting to note that an elderly Canterbury lady who is now assisting with the sewing of clothes to be sent Home and to Belgium, also helped to sew for those rendered destitute at tho time of the Crimean war. The lady referred to is Mrs Robert-son, mother of the school mistress at Fair view.

His Excellency the Governor on Saturday held an investiture at which Mr Christopher James Parr, Mayor of Auckland, was invested "with the insignia of Companion of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George. Mr -Thomas Ronayne, late General Manager of the New Zealand Railways, was invested with the badge of the Companion of the Imperial Service Order.

The death is announced of Mrs S. H. Pilcher, whose residence in Wellington extended over 50 years. Born near London in 1837, the deceased lady was a. daughter of Mr T. W. Downs, J.P. She arrived in Nelson with her parents by the ship John McVicar; in ,1857. The family removed shortly afterwards to Picton. In 1860 she married Mr Thos. W. Pilcher, and was identified with the social life of the community in its early days. Her husband predeceased her by 13 years, and the surviving family consists of four sons and two daughters, besides numerous grandchildren.

Mr Alfred Ruff, one of Manawatu's old residents, died at his residence, Summerhayes street, Paimerston, yesterday morning, aged 70 years. MiRuff was born at Auckland' He came to the Manawatu distriot 42 years ago, and became a contractor. He resided for 28 years of that period at Bunnythorpe, but latterly had lived afc Paimerston.. A little over four years ago he was smitten with paralysis, and lie had been bed-ricTden ever since. He leaves a widow, two sons —Alfred, in San Francisco, and Arthur, at Wanganui—and three daughters—Mrs C. F. Dogge'tt (Woodville), Mrs W. Pitt-am (Taumarunui), and Mrs T. A. Wood (Shannon)—beside nine grand-children.

Monsignor Bonaventura Ceretti, to whom the Pope gave an audience last week, is to be the Apostolic Delegate to Australia, Oceania, and New Zealand.. He was for some time of the Washington Delegation. When the appointment was first announced, the Rome correspondent of the, London Observer stated that Monsignor Ceretti's appointment to Australasia had caused surprise in Catholic circles in the Eternal City. It was understood that the late Cardinal Moran had impressed upon Pius X. the necessity for decentralising the Church in the most distant colonies, and had suggested a Primate for Australia, who • should also be Papal Legate. The Pope decided instead that an Apostolic Delegate should be the connecting link.
