GENERAL NOGI'S PROPHECY.

An Italian military correspondent records the prophesy of General Nogi, made in his hearing at the time of the siege of Port Arthur, when ho said: "Tho world will yet see two great wars, equally terrible. In the first, which will have all Europe for a battleground, France will beat Germany on land, and England will crush Germany at sea. This will be the last war in Europe for many years, perhaps for ever. The second war will see Japan against the United States in the Pacific, and Japan will win."

The cargo of 3000 tons of coal which the steamer Wanaka brought to Auckland from Newcastle on Thursday was one that would have made good spoil for marauding German cruisers. Tho vessel made the passage across the Tasman, however, without encountering anything more exciting than a gale, which blew with considerably more than usual violence. The bad weather lasted throughout Monday and Tuesday last, and during that time the decks were being constantly swept by tremendous seas, while all of those on board experienced an extremely uncomfortable time.
