The Times, in a leader, says: "We are in a position to state*, on the highest authority, that there is not a vestige of foundation for the story, in the shape of an interview published in the New York American with ' a highly placed official of the Brit- I ish Government, representing that- ! Britain was putting out "feelers" for ' peace through the medium of the I United States. No such statement j has been made by any representative I of the British Government. Mr Vs r . H. Hearst (the owner, of a sjroup of ' influential pro - German American papers) palmed olf upon the readers of his papers incautiously, if innocently, mischievous fiction calculates-] to create distrust and bad blood between the Allies."
