Fully 5000 people wero present- at the second test match 'between the English ladies' hockey team and New Zealand, played at Lancaster Park this afternoon.. The weather was a. trille warm and the ground hard, but nevertheless a brilliant exhibition of hockey was witnessed, though the game was not so exciting as the first test match at Wellington last Wednesday. The New Zealand players showed wonderfully improved form in bot-h-back and fonvanl lines, and out s-lasseij the English, who inside gallantbut unavailing efforts, to win. Manybrilliant forward rushes on both sides, but tho respective goal-keepers saved time after time. New Zealand scored first. Miss Kruse (Canterbury) being responsible. Before half-time Miss Gaskell (England's captain) sent a stinging shot. and before the home goal-keeper could clear Miss Lambley scored, making the scores even at half-time. In the second .spell, New Zealand played more brilliantly. A few minutes after resuming jNew Zealand attacked strongly, and Miss Malcolm (Gis borne) scored ;i secoud goal ainids' applause. Piny became faster, and •only a few minutes elapsed before New Zealand scored again, Miss Kruse hitting in hard. Fast play prevailed until the call of time. Messrs Walton and Manning were referees. Both teams left for Rotorua and Auckland to-night for the third .-md final test, next Saturday, at Auckland.
