THE COUNTY RATES.
On Saturday the Kiwitea County Council confirmed the striking of rates as advertised. Cr. McNeil protested, on behalf of the Pakihikura Riding, at the increase in the levy, and suggested that the heavier rate should be spread over a period of two or three years. To this the Chairman, Cr. Fowler, stated that the increase meant about £3000 spread over the whole County, and the settlers, having experienced a splendid season, would not find the payment of the increased rate a difficult matter. He quoted statistics to show that Kiwitea County was rated lower than the majority of Counties, and lower than almost any of the Counties in this part of the island. Others endorsed this view, and the resolution was carried , unanimously.
