AN ANTI-MILITARIST.
Stanley Tuiinocliffe, a lad of about 16 years, was brought before the Court this morning charged with having failed to attend drill. Mr Gillespie appeared for Tunnecliffc, and said his client was relying on the fact that his residence was over five miles from the drill centre. In answer to the Bench, defendant said he did not intend to take the oath or to attend urill. The Magistrate remarked it was ii matter of principle with the lad. "The law says you must attend drill and do your duty," said his Worship, "and you cannot, defy it. It is not a question of sending you to fight. If you do not want to fight, other duties can be found you; but you must attend drill." The lad had no remarks to make. A fine of £3, with 7s costs, was imposed, whereupon Tunnecliffe said he was- not going to pay it. The Magistrate said thut matter would be gone into later.
