FIFTH TEST MATCH TO-DAY.
(Received February 23,10.20 a.m.) Sydney, February 23. Tha weather is dull and threatening for the fifth and fiual test match, which starts here to-day. The English team will be the same as in the State match, except that Hitoh and Smith .replace Mead and Strudwiek.
Hill, speaking for ihe six rejected players, declared: "We "are very sorry at the turn of affairs, and have done all we can to secure a settlement. The Board Of Control still objects to Mr Layer as "manager, though I offered them all' the ' books } and papers of the tour and to let • Mr McElhono appoint an arbitrator, to abide by his decisoh as to whetherLayer was disloyal. He refused, repeating that '' .Layer was disloyal. Why don't they select the wiiolc team, .and allow them to select their manager ?" ■ . Dr. Mailer, one of the Victorian representatives on the Board of Control, declared that the Secretary had no right to take definite action, as the players accepted conditionally. He will want to know why the Secretary took the action he did without a further meeting of the Board. The |'downright''dishonourable.
