The first of the test pieces was played at tlie North Island 8.8. Assoc-i.-i- , lion's contests hist night in Wanganui. 'The weather was fine, and a very large number oi people gathered in the beautiful grounds of the Jockey Club. The B Grade bands, of which there were ten, played first, their terit piece being "Belle of Brittany." The A first grade contest between Wanganui Garrison and Petone prov■ed a very easy thing for the ehainpion, who, in tbe language of the judge, put up a very fine performance, while Petone came in for rather unfavourable criticism. Wanganui scored 120 points and Petone 76. The test- piece was "Liszt." Makes no .alteration between C sharp and D in bar 14. Blurred 23. Cuts bis crochets too short. Phrasing poor. No meaning in playing at all. Too fast. No conception of the piece. Andante: Opened very nicely. Bar 13 too fast. It is marked '"'a little more animation." Takes notice l of expression marks. Breaks into bar 30 tod soon.
