CRICKET.

<&. TOUR OF THE AUSTRALIANS.

THE FIRST TEST. |

A RALLY, BUT TOO LATE.

EASY WIN FOR MAYNE.

PER PRESS ASSOCIATION. Christchurch, Marcli 15. The cricket match, Australia v. New Zealand, was resumed at 11.30 in fine weather, with a fresh easterly breeze. The attendance was fair, the wicket dead, and the outfield very slow after the rain. NEW ZEALANDERS BATTING. Sims and Midlane were the batsmen and Wbitty and Kelleway the bowlers. Play opened very cautious- I ly, the batsmen taking no risks and finding a difficulty in driving the ball any distance along the dead turf. Five overs produced six runs, and eleven overs six maidens. Whit-ty was bowling, with one man on the on-side. At 222, when 21 runs had been added to Saturday's score, Sims was' smartly caught at the wickets oft Whitty. 222—5—11. MacFarlane followed, and the score was unaltered. Hopkins then bowled Midlane. 222^— 6— 47. Oliff jointed MacFarlane, who hit_ Whitty to leg for four, the ball failing to roach the boundary. Oliff was clean howled by Hopkins. 228—7—2. Bennett partnered MacFarlane. Two fours to MacFarlane off Whitty roused enthusiasm, but Hopkins bowled Bennett. 236—8—0. For an hour's play 35 runs were recorded. Boxshall was next, and five were added when MoFarlan© was easily caught by Warne in the slips off Whitty. 242—9—16. The Otago batsman hit four fours. Howden was the last man. Two fours By Boxshall off Hopkins caused 250 to appear. Boxshall livened tho play, but was stumped off Gorry's pads. 258— 10—17. The following were the scores:— -NEW ZEALAND. Mac- j Farlane, 21 runs; Haddon, 6 runs, j BENNETT'S BOWLING. J New Zealand's bowling, with the \ exception of that of Bennett, was ' made to look very simple by the fine ; hatting of Mayne. Bennett, how- j ever, who clean bowled Bardsley, ! bowled splendidly, and while the batsmen were nraking runs at the rate of one hundred per hour Bennett ' sent down 7.5 overs for 15 runs and got a wicket. Why Bennett was not put on to bowl earlier is inexplicable.
