At the inquest on Mrs Day (wife of Constable Day, who set hre to her house to burn her children, afterwards cutting her own throat) a letter was read from Mrs Day addressed to the Commissioner oi Police in which she accused her husband of wrongdoing with her step-sister and intimated- her intention of putting an end to the condition of things. She .added: "Some people will say I am mad!'' Rose WoodAvard, the step-sister, admitted being in love with Day, and stated that on. the night of the fire Mrs Day awoke her and led her to the dining-room, apparently trying to throw her on to the fire. A verdict was returned that the deceased was mentally unsound. Day has Been discharged from the police force for joining the force in the name of his brother because he was over the regulation age. A TERRIFIC COLLISION. Sydney, March 8. The steamer Wyreema, outward bound, collided with the collier Jiurrajong, from the South Coast, off Bradley's Head. The collier sank in five minutes. One man is missing, but the rest of the crew were rescued by ferryboats. The Wyreema returned to port considerably damaged. (Received March 9, 11.15 a.m.) Sydney, March 9. The Wyreema struck the Kurrajong a_ terrific blow at right angles amidships and almost cut her in halves. A vast volume of water poured into the collier, extinguishing the. iires. The vessel settled by her 'head immediately, and -within a few minutes had plunged headlong to the bottom. The Wyreema immediately lowered a boat and rescued the ctow. with the exception of one man. The night was dark. One of a number of motor boats and other craft which were quickly on the spot picked up the missing man. The damage to the Wyreema is not serious, being confined to three small holes in the bows j above the w-a-torline. The collision was apparently due to the Kurrajone in seeking to avoid sailing craft, getting right across the Wyreema's j course. r . FLOODS AND TRAGEDY. Adelaide, March 9. A Portuguese..named Bonello, living at Nurisopta, jealous of the attachment of a girl of twelve, named Norma Plush, for another person, fired an ineffective shot at her while the child was reading. It is stated that mine owners have forwarded a letter to Judge Seholes definitely stating that they are not prepared to agree to a settlement on the lines suggested by Mr Charlton, and that, as far as they are concerned, negotiations-are at an end.
