Mackenzie indicated his intention of running a steamer excursion from Dunedin to the West Coast Sounds at Easter, if possible, at a reasonable fare. BIG BUSH FIRE RAGING. Thames, February 9. At the Police Court this morning, -* John Trainor, William Thomas, and George Williams (the latter with several aliases) were charged with assaulting an old man named James Carter in the back premises of an hotel last night, and robbing him of a small sum of money. The men were remanded, Williams being allowed bail in £100 and two sureties of £50 each. DISAPPEARED! Auckland, February 10. At a meeting of the creditors of Lacy Tibbet Williams, who carried on business as the Northern Wholesale Supply Deport, it was stated that the debtor had disappeared. The assets in the estate are estimated at £140 and the liabilities at about £340. NEW S.M. FOR WANGANUI. ; Wanganui, February 10. William Kerr, solicitor, of New Plymouth, who has been appointed Stipendiary Magistrate of Wanganui, was officially sworn in as S.M. by Mr C. C. Graham, S.M., of Dunedin, who has been relieving here since the retirement of Mr Stanford, S.M. Mr Graham returned to Dunedin to-day. HARBOUR LOAN DEFEATED. Napier, February 10. Later returns of the Harbour loan poll turned the scale against the proposal, the country vote showing very solid opposition. At present there are several small returns still to come, but they cannot affect the result. The proposal was lost by about 150 votes. N.Z. ROWING ASSOCIATION CHAMPIONSHD?. Auckland, February 10. Arrangements for the N.Z. Rowing Association championship regatta, which is to take place at Mercer on Saturday, are well forward. All the crews training could not be in better form. Waitemata, Blenheim, and PictOn each expect to win the champion fours. . -Fine crews represent Blenheim and Pic ton, and an exciting finish is expected. The river presents a perfect picture.
