THE PENALTY TO BE PAID. L'KOIxnOOWV M~B- HHd] Dunedin, December 21. In the Police Court this afternoon, Robert Forbes pleaded not guilty to a charge that, being master of the steamer Gowanburn, he did permit a Chinaman to land without fulfilling the requirements of the Immigration Restriction Act, 1908. Defendant was fined £6 Is with costs (£3 10s). A second charge was withdrawn. If this Chinese is not recaptured, the Company will be responsible for the payment of the poll tax. He left the ship at Lyttelton.
