THE SCHOOL PICNIC. UUll OWN OOftfiESPONDJJKT.J Our little settlement presented quite a gala appearance on Friday last, the occasion being the annual treat given to the school children. The picnic, wihieh was held in the spacious grounds attached to the school, attracted visitors irom far and near, a .number from Utuwai-and Piri Piri being present. The schoolroom, which (had been transformed into a banquet-ing-haill, was taxed to its utmost. TUiere was only one complaint 'heard, and that came from the tables, which literally groaned under their loads of delicacies. After justice had been done to the good things provided, an adjournment was made to the playground, where old and young joined (heartily in the good old-fasihioned games. Our juvenile sprinters were then ©iyen an opportunity of showing what they were capable of, close finishes being the order of the day. A special prize of a work-basket, presented b^y Mr Bennett, of PaJlmerston North, tell to Gladys Buckman, who proved too fleet for her schoolmates. After the races, the children were assembled for the presentation of prizes. Mr A. Wycherley, a member of the School Committee, after tihanking tlhe householders for tfaeir generous contributions to the prize fund, presented each pupil with handfionidyribound book. TShe children showed their appreciation by giving three heaxty c3ieers for the Committee. Afternoon tea (was then dispensed by tlhe ladies, after which one and all dispersed homewards, thus ending one of the most enjoyable functions helld in tlie tListricb. In the evening a social and dance was held, capital music being supplied by Messrs MulIwire and H. Osborne.
