AWAHURI SCHOOL
A PICNIC AND SOME PRIZES. There was a large gathering of school children on Mr H. H. Stephens' fine property at Awahuri yesterday in connection with the annual school picnic and prize-giving, and quite a number of parents and friends assisted to enhance the representative nature of the function. Mr J. Collingwood (Chairman of iihe Committee) and Messrs Bryan, Moore, Avery, and J. Oke carried through a long programme of sporis, and games and refreshments (looked after by a number of ladies) assisted to fill up a good time. In the afternoon, Mr Fred. Pirani (Chairman of the Education' Board) briefly addressed the assemblage and presented the prizes, which included a book for every child, as well as special prizes for those who came out best in the examinations. Mrs Moore presented a special prize to the best writer in tlhe first Standard, in memory of her little son who had died. Standard Vl .—George Lucas, Ist; Myrtle Bailey 2nd. Standard III.: Bernard Avery, Ist; Victoria Stuart and Kiria Karehana, 2nd; Willie Barnes, 3rd. Standard II. : Erl Tarrant, Ist ; Sarah, Barnes, 2nd; Joe Wereta, 3rd; Leonard Oke, 4th. Standard I. : May Whittle, Ist ; Margaret Nuku, 2nd; Bernard King and Grace Edwards, [3rd. Mrs Moore's special for writing (in memory of Ross Moore) in Standard 1., Mary Whittle. • The money for the prizes (£10) was raised by a concert promoted by Messrs Weightman and Needham recently.
