CULVERDEN ESTATE.

♦ ACQUIRED FOR CLOSER SETTLEMENT. AWARD, £119,450. [PEB PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Christchurch, March 23. The award of the Compensation Court in connection with the compulsory acquisition of the Culverden estate by the Government for the purpose of closer settlement, was given this afternoon. The members of the Court were Mr Justice Denniston (president), and Messrs J. Ren» nic and D. D. MacfarLane (assessors) representing the Government and owners respectively. The owners claimed £160,637 as compensation for the acquisition of the estate. The President stated the award had been arrived at by a majority of the Court, and the award was to include all subjects of the claim in a lump sum. It was understood that of two amounts included in the memorandum from both parties £382 5s and £168 15s for adjusting mortgages as settling any claim against the Crown, and the Crown was freed from any liability on that account. The award also included costs and also contained a declaration as to the land tax contained in the second paragraph of the memorandum. The Court awarded to the claimants tho sum of £119,450 and fixed the assessors' fees at £10 10s for the four clays. Tho award would be drawn up by the Crown.
