IMPROVEMENT IN HEMP. Wellington, -March' 23. The High Commissione rcables under date, London, .March 21 : — There is a scarcity of primo quality mutton and holders are firm. The trade is vei*y disappointing, there being only a very hand-to-mouth demand. The following are the current quotations : Canterbury, 4|d ; North Island 3£d; River Plate, 3gd; Australian, 3)d. The lamb market is firm, and there is a good demand for all brands, although high prices are restricting business. Canterbury is quoted at 5-Jd; other than Canterbury, s£d. There is a. better demand for beef, especially for hindquarters, which are quoted at 3|d; f orequarters . 2|d. Some holders of butter are forcing sales, and a bear movement is reported, but such action is considered unwarranted. Ligh shipments of butter are expected, and none is held in^jstock. There is a general and active demand at a decline in themarket. Choicest New Zealand butter, 113s; Australia, 110s; Danish, 120s per cwt. The cheese market is dull, and complaint has been received of immaturity and openness in the New Zealand brands. "White makes are quoted at 595, coloured at 61s per cwt. There are signs of improvement in the hemp market, with a better demand. The following are the current quotations : Good, fair grade, on spot, £24; fair grade, on spot, £21 10s; fair, current Manila, £24. AprilMay shipments : Good fair grade, £23 10s; fair grade, £21 10s. Tho cocksfoot <seed market is excited. Buyers are offering freely, and stocks are light. Bright, clean 171 b seed, 84s per cwt. The wool market is quiet at a decline. Bradford itops are quoted as foHows: 36's, low erossbreds, lOd; 40's low orossbreds, lOJd ; 44' a medium crossbrods, 12 Jd ; 50' s halfbreds, 17id ; 56's quarterbreds, 20Jd ; 60's merinos, 24Jd.
