[Piß PBKSS ASSOCIATION.] Nelson, June 17. Further particulars concerning the fire on the oil launch and the drowning of three Maoris show that the fire was caused through a lantern being dropped. Reue Tewhetu pluckily endeavoured to extinguish the flames with his coat and Mohane fell overboard while hastening to assist, and some of the others jumped overboard, while trying to save his wife and their little son. Mohi was also drowned, as well as Mrs Henata, an elderly woman. There were eleven persons in the launch, and eight were saved. Invercargill, June 17. An intersting compensation case was decided by Mr McCarthur, S.M. Albert Stevens claimed £175 from Paul Brown, of whom he alleged he was an employee. Brown owns a flaxmill and claimant while sawing wood for a mill engine sustained severe injuries to his hand. Respondent denied liability for compensation under the Act, alleging that Stevens was not an employee but a contractor by agreement. Stevens and other were to be paid £20 per ton for fibre turned out by the mill, they paying the running expenses. Brown kept on eye on the work at the mill and had engaged men. . Claimant understood that he was covered by an accident policy. The question was whether the agreement was a contract. The Magistrate held that it was, and gave judgment for respondent with £10 18s costs. Christchurch, June 17. The following is the result of the third egg-laying competition at Lincoln College under the auspices of the Utility Poultry Club for the week ending June 14th. In a case arising out of the slaughtermen's strike at Timaru, Mr Justice Wiliams refused a writ of attachment whereby it was sought to send the defendant (H. Millar) to prison for failing to pay a fine of £5 imposed by the Arbitration Court at Timaru, for taking part in a strike. Wellington, June 17. At a meeting of the Council of the New Zealand Amateur Rowing Association held to-night it was resolved that in view of the repeated refusals of the Auckland Rowing Association to answer specific questions put by the Council in respect to the appeal of the Waitemata Rowing Club re a fourpenny levy, the Auckland Rowing Association be suspended until such time as a satisfactory reply is received to these questions.
