Earthquake shocks have been experienced round Stromboli, also in the vicinity of Gibraltar, travelling from north to south. FRANCE AND SPAIN. Madrid, June 17. France and Spain have exchanged a note mutually guaranteeing the maintenance of the status quo in those parts of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic wherein they are directly interested. The note does not constitute any alliance and is not accompanied by any military convention. Great Britain and Spain have exchanged a similar not© with a view of safeguarding their mutual interests.' These two agreements have been communicated to Germany and the other Great Powers. Paris, June 17. M. Pichon, in an interview, declared that the France-Spanish arrangement, besides seeking to maintain the status quo, which, owing to the proximity of their respective possessions, could not be modified without injuring the two Powers, security of communication with such possessions. The two arrangements were excellent guarantees of peace. Le Temps says the agreements are purely diplomatic. THE PEACE CONFERENCE. The Hague, June 17. M. Nelidoff, the Russian delegate, has been elected president of the Peace Convention. In the course of his speech assuming the presidency he said he rejoiced in the increasing disposition of States to resort to arbitration, but he counselled the Conference against being too ambitious, adding that nations had the same Sassions and weaknesses as indiviuals. He remarked that if Courts of Justices, despite the severity of the penalties wherewith they are armed, failed to prevent quarrels it would be the same between nation*, although the progress of conciliation and the softening of manners ought to diminish such cases. CRICKET. London, June 17. Correction — Jackson has definitely declined the captancy of the cricket team which visits Australia. Sydney, June 17. At a meeting of the Cricket Association the Premier, Mr Carruthers, was elected President. It was decided to unconditionally flemove the disqualification of the players.
