POPULAR SETTLERS ENTERTAINED.

A social evening was tendered by the residents of Makino and surrounding district to Messrs John Holder and W. Koberstein, at the residence of Mr W. Reid, Makino, last evening. Mr ■ Reid occupied the chair, and there were upwards of forty present. The Chairman apologised for the absence of a number of residents who were prevented from attending owing to the boisterous weather. Mr Reid, in opening the proceedings, asked the two guests of the evening to accept from the residents of Makino mementoes in the shape of a case of pipes to each, which were not given for their intrinsic value, but as slight tokens of goodwill and respect felt for the departing settlers. Mr Reid said that he was glad to learn that Mr Koberstein was not going further than Rongotea, where he had purchased Mr C. Hopping's farm, and there was also a likelihood of Mr Holder still remaining somewhere within the immediate neighborhood, although there was nothing definite yet arranged in that respect. The health of the two gentlemen was then drunk in bumpers. Messrs Holder and Koberstein suitably acknowledged the gifts. Instrumental and vocal items were rendered during the evening by Messrs Cuff, J. Bailey, W. Baker, W. Reid, Sandilands, Miss Holder and a number of S others. Mr S. Cameron also contributed a jig, Highland fling and reel. In responding to the toast of " Our Member," Mr F. Y. Lethbridge referred to the many good qualities possessed by their guests. Mr Holder, he said, had been resident in the district for thirty years, and Mr Koberstein for nine years, and both of them had proved genuine settlers. Other toasts honored were— Messrs Nathan and Co. and the Farmers, proposed by Mr Reid and responded to by Mr Dunford ; " The Auctioneers," responded to by Messrs Gorton and Carr; "Host ar.d Hcrtrir, proposed by Mr Lethbridge and responded to by Mr Reid. A most enTovable evening's amusement was continued till the " wee sma' oors."
