THE HALCOMBE BURGLARY.

At the Palmerston Supreme Court yesterdfay, Christopher Hyna-n was charged with breaking and entering the house of A. D. Scott at lialcombe 011 April Ist and stealing a gold watch and £7. Mr Loughnau prosecuted, and Mr Harden appeared for accused, who pleaded not guilty. The jury empanelled were — D. Buiek, foreman, W. Copelaml, C. S. Pickering, \V. Osborne, jnr., E. Hey worth, G. Stanford, W. Smith, J. L. Easther, A. Kale, J. Duley, G. Baldwin, A. Erickson. W. G. Grantham, of Bulls, stated that accused had worked for him at Bulls, and that ho left to go to Haleombo. A. D. Scott deposed that ho left his house for some time locked up, and in one of the rooms was a watch and £'7. When ho came back ho found the place disarranged. There was a bottle under one of the beds that had contained beer. J . . A. Lukashofski, proprietor of Haleombe Hotel, deposed to seeing accused at the hotel. He asked for a loan of os, which was refused. Ho left the hotel during the night with two l|J|*les of beer. Detective Sicklies gave evidence as to accused having disappeared from Halcombe during the night, and having purchased a ticket at Grcatford for Hawera. He had money in his possession when arrested. J. Kosser deposed to passing accused on the morning after the theft. He asked the way to the station, and gave witness a coat to take back to the hotel for him. There was a watch in tin* pocket, but counsel for the Crown admitted that this was not the stolen watch. The stationmastor at Greatford admitted soiling a ticket to a colored man on the same morning.
