SATURDAY'S MATCHES.

SENIOR. FEILDING (3)"v~~OLD BOYS (0). The Feilding and Old Boys Senior teams met on the Racecourse on Saturday, when the local players secured their fifth victory. The ground was in a very bad state, being sloppy and muddy, consequently there was scarcely any back play, and not much pretty football. Feilding kicked off with the sun in their eyes, and it was at once seen the game was going to be left principally to the forwards. Gradually the ball was pressed up to Old Boys' 25, and here Goodbeherc, receiving a pass, looked like making a good run, but he punted 'the ball over the lino, and Old Boys forced. With the ball in play again, Feilding forwards put in , several good dribbling rushes, and, keeping it going well, D. Whisker dribbled over the line, and he and the opposing full back had an exciting race for it. The big man won, shouldered off his opponent, and fell on the ball in the right hand corner. Ongley failed to kick a goal | The forwards of both teams fought for the ball with all the strength they could command, and there was not a single passing rush by the local backs. Owing to the nature of the ground, it was difficult to stand up, or run. Old Boys got the ball several times from the scrum, but their backs were unable to do anything with it. If the local forwards got the ball out, Ongley, who was playing a grand game, with coolness and good judgment, either kicked or bustled through the forwards. Time and again he saved the situation by his clover play. In the local forwards, the two Whiskers were playing a good, hard game, and their dribbling had often the effect of relieving the situation. In the threequarter line, the two Prices were doing very well. The visitors were unable to break through, and the score was unaltered at naif time. Beginning tho second spell, Old Boys made titanic struggles to get through Feilding's defence, and put in some good dribbling ; but it was all to no purpose. Whenever the forwards were in trouble, Ongloy came to the rescue, and the brilliance of his play was most conspicuous. Once the ball was kicked out almost on Feilding's goal line, and the excitement was intense. But Feilding managed to secure the ball when it got over the line, and forced. Feilding then took the ball up the field, and for the last ten minutes it was in Old Boys' territory nearly the whole time. However, when the whistle sounded "no side," Captain Ongley, covered in mud and glory, again had the pleasure of leading a victorious team off the ground. The margin of victory, was a narrow one ? and the teams were pretty evenly matched. Mr Wardon, referee, gave general satisfaction. PALMERSTON (11) v. HUIMAI (3). This match was played on the Palmerston Showground on Saturday, the ground being in fairly good order. Palmerston drew first blood, Nicholson scoring a goal from a free kick, but the country team had the best of the play, notwithstanding that the wind was against them. In the second spell, Tapu passed the ball to Carroll, who beat three players and scored a try. Huimai had another chance oi scoring, a free kick .being given them right in front of the goal, but only a poster resulted. From a great run by Stewart, Martis got the leather and scored a try for Palmerston. Then Sievers crossed the Huimai line, and Nicholson converted, and the game ended in a win for Palmerston by 11 to 3. The play was not of a high order, the North Island rep. especially being disappointing. Hughes, as usual, was the pick of the backs, and the forwards worked well, but lacked knowledge of the intricacies of the game — perhaps McNae picked some points up down Souths and will initiate them. For the winners Martis and Stewart of the backs,, and Boon and Kyle, of the forwaids gave the best display. Mr Payne referoed.
