German agents are trying to persuade discharged Woolwich arsenal workmen to emigrate to Germany. Officials have warned the workmen that they must preserve the arsenal secrets, and the discharges continue. MURDER AND SUICIDE. Guatemala, May 23. The four men who attempted to assassinate the President of Guatemala took refuge in an empty house. When the troops surrounded the house, the conspirators fired, killing and wounding three officials of high rank, and then committed suicide. £200,000 ON LUXURIES. New York, May 23. Mr Pierpont Morgan has purchased in Paris £200,000 worth of Hoentschel's collection of carvings, statuary, and furniture which is one of the finest in the world. He presents the renaissance portion to the New York Metropolitan museum. AMERICA'S NEW PRESIDENT. Reuter reports that the Senate of New York State has passed a Public Utilities Bill, creating two commissioners for the regulation of corporations conducting public services, railroads, lighting, etc. Mr Hughes, Governor of the State, is closely identified with the measures, the adoption of which has enhanced his chances of nomination as the Republican candidate for the Presidency in the event of President Roosevelt not standing again. INFURIATED WOMEN. (Received May 24th, 8.37 a.m.) Rome, May 23, A mob of infuriated women stormed the factories at Terni, Italy, in order to expel those who were displacing their husbands who were on strike. The troops charged the women. RECIPROCAL TREATY. London, May ' 23. Sir W. Lyne met Hon. W. S. Fielding, Canadian Minister of Finance, and discussed the question of Reciprocal Treaty between Canada and Australia. j
