NOTES.

(by A.K.) Last Saturday's Senior match between Palmerston and Feilding Was quite the most interesting of the season so far, and waa a good, clean, fast exhibition. Feilding were always the better team, but I think that on the run of the game they were hardly five tries better than their opponents. The local backs certainly won the game. They pleased the spectators immensely by the way they threw the ball about, although, to my mind, much of the passing was rather feeble. The fault lies with the inside five-eighth. It is a standing rule that this player must receive the " ball from the scrum half when travelling at top speed. Once under weigh he must travel "run straight." That is, in a line parallel to the touch lines, or as near that line as possible. If not, he jams his threequarters on to the touch line. Goodbehere's tries on Saturday were scored by coming back from the touch-line; but a player of his speed should always get sufficient room to use that speed. Certainly all the outside players took the ball well, and kicked in good style. Let me rub it in once again : All the backs must run straight, and not crowd their wing three-quarters into touch Huimai have struck trouble fairly early in the season, and have been the first to suffer from a man's being ordered off the ground. It was not rough play that brought about llobertson's suspension, but a rather too free expression of his opinions to the referee. The Seven-aside Tournament on June 3rd promises to be a big success. Circulars have been forwarded to clubs as far away as Wanganui, "Wellington, and Ornrondville, and quite a number of outside teams are expected to takepart. It is hardly likely that any Wanganui teams will play, as the Wanganui Union is having a tournament of its own that day. For the first time this season neutral touch judges were appointed in last Saturday's Senior game here. One of them made a slight slip in awarding a ball in touch to the wrong side, and the skipper of the unfortuuates wanted to know if they were not entitled to their own touch judge. It was well for Thompson that he had taken advantage or the Union's ii surance scheme before he stepped on to the ground to take part in the Senior game. A broken bone will keep him out of the game for some time. He has not been blessed with a great deal of good luck this season, for he has only just recovered from a poisoned hand. Bulls has evidently gone back to its first love and very sensibly dropped the idea of playing in the Foxton Sub-Union matches. Hunterville visited Bulls on Wednesday and wmi by 11 points to 3. This was the first of the seasn's matches under the Rangitiliei Union. The- best part of an hour was wasted by the Union committee on Tuesday night discussing the question of posting defaulters. Unfortunately the by-laws of the Union are in such a glorious tangle that little or Mo reliance can be placed on them. From information I have received from some on© in the know ; I believe the chances of the professional team for England are not quite so rosy as they were. The idea of the New Zealand Union in demanding that every player solected fo.* the North and South teams and the team for Australia, should enter into an agreement to have nothing to do with the proposal, must prove a serious stumbling block to the promoters. Unless the men composing the team have played for New Zealand, or taken part in the inter-island match, their status will not be sufficiently high to ensure the necessary attraction in Northern Union circles.
