Oleai and Ifaluka appear to have been the centre of the disturbance which raged with terrific fury. The other principal islands of the group also suffered severely, but the people of Ponape, Ruk, Yap, and Pelew escaped. According to an officer of the German surveying corvette Planet, which was despatched to the assistance of the distressed Islands, not a house remains standing on Oleai, and every cocoanut palm was stripped. Besides 200 persons drowned at Oleai, 25 natives perished at Ifalulk. Brisbane, May 22. While the hurricane was at its height a tidal wave swept Oleai. The German Commissioner was visiting the island at the time, and his schooner was blown to sea, but eventually reached Saipan, in the Mariamne Group. The Resident Commissioner at Saipan at once organised a relief expedition, and but for this probably the whole of the survivors on Oleai would have perished of starvation, as no boat was due to call at the island for four months. The island of Mokeffloke suffered considerably, all food supplies being destroyed. The Planet rescued a hundred natives from this island, and took them to Yap to save them dying of starvation.'/ EMPIRE DAY. (Received May 23rd, 10.0 a.m.) Sydney, May 23.
