Ernest Kelly, who had pre\iously been convicted of being an idle and disorderly person, pleaded not guilty to being a rogue and a vr-gabond and the consort of reputed thieves. The jury returned a verI diet of guilty. Prisoner, who ha<] been in gaol awaiting trial for two months, was sentenced to four add' Itional months. Ada Smith was found guilty with a recommendation to mercy on a charge of receiving stolen property, and remanded till to-morrow. Christchurch, May 13. Thomas Coogan, charged with bieaking and entering a shop ami dwelling, was found guilty and was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment. Walter Lewis Smith pleaded not guilty of assaulting and robbing a girl on board the Waikare on March 29th. Accused, it was alleged, entered the woman's cabin at four o'clock in the morning and assaulted her and stole her purse containing £3 3s 6d. He was sentenced to three years' hard labour. Accused bad served sentences for assault in Australia. Andrew Edward Ward was found guilty of obtaining sums of £5 an<l £14 from a woman by false pretences. As there was another indictment against accused the Judgo deferred passing sentence. The Grand Jury found no bill in the cases of manslaughter against William Barnard Rhodes Moorhousf and Edith Matheson Malzard. Gisborne, May 13. R u ton©, aged 14 years, was convicted ana discharged for an unnatural offence. Jo© Riley, a Maori, was acquitted on a charge of horse stealing, and David Blythe McEwan found guilty of the same offence, will be sentenced to-morrow.
