[PEB PEBBS ASSOCIATION.] Napier, May 13. The Rev. Alexander Shepherd, one of the earliest Presbyterian ministers in the province, died this evening at the age of 82. He arrived in New Zealand in 1865 and was soon after inducted to the church atWaipukurau, at which place he became the first clerk of the Hawke's Bay Presbytery. He afterwards filled for many years the position of pastor of the Havelock Presbyterian Church and has also preached in the Geraldine and many other Southland churches. Adams, President of Temperance Committee, referred to a certain abuse which he said called for removal at once. Beer shops he said were in existence on the Invercargill border and another brewery was being built on the boundary. Invercargill, however, was a glowing example of the benefits of no license. The Oamaru experience had been a brilliant success, and 46 prominent business men of Ashburton had signed a statement that trade was never better than at present under Prohibition. It was resolved that the meeting approved of the appointment of a No License Committee of Otago to be appointed at Dunedin Convention on June 5, and also of the proposed petition to Parliament to abolish bottle licenses now in existence in Otago, Nelson and Marlborough. Nelson, May 13. A fire broke out this morning in one of two shops occupied by Trathen and Co., drapers, Bridge street. When these, with the adjoining shop occupied by Craig (bootmaker) were practically gutted, the Brigade worked splendidly, and soon had the flames in check. The building was owned by B. Moller, and was insured for £500, but the office is now known. Craig's stock was insured for £200 . in the Queensland office, but was valued at £1200. Trathen's stock was insured for £150 in the Liverpool, London, and Globe, £450 in the State office, and £200 in the Phoenix. It was valued at £1200.
