ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES

• ♦ Telegraph Press Association Gopynuht. Dunedin, May 15. The inquest touching tbe death of Archibald MoEay, one of the employers of the Milburn Lime and Cement Company, who died from inhaling poisonous fumes, was continued to day. The medical evidence was to the effect that tbe symptoms and conditions found on post mortem corresponded to arsenireted hydrogen poisoning. Dr Black professor of chemistry, who conducted the analysis, said he found arsenic in the liver, lungs, kidneys, spleen, bladder, stomach, and in four different liquids. He found it in all samples. The tendency of Dr Black's evidence went to show that the men, who were engaged dipping wire in muriatic acid to remove galvanism, had probably added "in mistake some weed exterminator named "Havoc," which was in a drum near where they were working, and.whioh contained a considerable quantity of arsenic, or the cask they were rinsing had- been previously used for making this weed exterminator, and the wood in the cask had absorbed the arsenic. Assuming that the latter theory was correct, tbe fact of the men having used the same cask ten days previously with- , out any injury would probably be due to the muriatic acid not having bad time to liberate the arsenic absorbed by the wood. The foreman of tbe Cement Works, in evidence, could not say definitely whether tbe cask had been used previously to make up any mixture. The inquest stands adjoured. Napier, May 15.
