The Cheltenham Club will hold a practice to-morrow afternoon, at 2 o'clock. We draw the attention of local athletes to the fact that nominations for the Feilding Athletic Club's sports close on Thursday, 7th inst. The Club has, this year, issued a most attractive programme, and is giving away £250 in prize money, which is the largest amount given by any Club in New Zealand for a one-day meeting. Reports received in Wanganui state that many natives on the Wanganui River are in sore straits for food owing \ to the potatoes last year being ruired by the potato blight. Many families are said to be practically starving, and reduced to living on fern and such other foods as they could obtain out of tbe bush. The Wanganui Education Board, at the instance of the Chief Inspector, has decided that in future the examinations for the Sixth Standard certificate shall be held simultaneously throughout the district towards the end of each year. The Herald says the proposal involves the most radical change in school organisation yet attempted in the district. To-morrow afternoon, at 2 o'clock, Mr A. H. Atkinson will hold a sale of drapery, on behalf of the Sydney Cash Drapery Company. The sale will be held at tile Manchester Hotel sample rooms. This is the second sale the Company has held and, as they carry a good stock of useful lines, and the sale is absolutely without reserve, a good opportunity is afforded of securing bargains. The second annual 6b ow of the FeildIndustrial Agricultural and Pastoral Association will be take place on the 7th February next, particulars of which are now advertised. The schedule is an extensive one, comprising classes for competitions in horses, cattle, sheep, pigs, produce, and home industries. The prize money totals £680.
