W.C.T.U. SOCIAL,

The W.C.T.U. had a record attendance at their social yesterday afternoon in tbe Grey-streec Hall, which was decorated with banners, flowers and white ribbon. Miss Minchin presided and opened the meeting by reading a portion of Scripture. In her comments she referred interestingly to the great Welsh revival. She urged her audience to pray for a similar movement for this colony, which would not only do away with drunkenness, but every other vice. Mr Budd gave a most interesting account of the effects of no license in Bruce and Mataura, giving many instances he knew of men, both moderate and drunkard, who seemed to adopt sobriety aa a matter of course when open temptation was removed. He told of some who, on the restoring of licenses in Bruce, returned to their bad habits again. The programme was nicely varied with appropriate solos by Mesdamea Gibson, Pickering and Miss Bray, accompanied on the pianoforte by Miss James. The Rev. Olpheri also addressed the meeting, and gave an account of a recent misfortune as a result of intoxication in this district. The meeting heartily wished one of the oldest members, Mrs Sorley, who is about to visit the Old Country, a pleasant voyage there, and a safe return to the Colony, Fifteen new members were reoeived with the usual initiation service, after wbicb ample refreshments were handed round. General satisfaction was expressed at the pleasant and profitable gathering. The President, on behalf of the meeting, thanked the several speakers and singers for their valuable assist* , ance. : The meeting was closed in the ] usual devotional manner. :
