SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

Telegraph Frees Association. Copyright Wellington, Sept. 4. A deputation representing 346 of the sobool committees of the Colony waited on the Premier to-day and drew his attention to the need for an amendment of the Education Act in the direction of making more explicit provision for consultation of committees by Education Boards in the appointment and removal of teachers. The Premier agreed that the matter was of considerable importance, and that the present condition of affairs needed alteration. There should be something more definite than now prevailed. If the committees were to have powers they should be defined. If their duties were to be merely perfunctory, the Legislature should say so. He was satisfied committees should have greater powers than now, and there should be a higher authority to settle disputes. He advised the deputation to embody its request in a petition to Parliament. _— «»—
