FIRE IN WELD STREET.

Shortly before noon to day an alarm of fire rang out from the Stafford street bell. It was discovered that tbe fire had started in !)he front portion of a four-roomed cottage situated at the corner of Weld and Bowen streets. The cottage was owned by Mrs Murray, and occupied by Mr A. R. Rusden, a compositor employed at the Star office. The Fire Brigade, Firo Police, and a number of willing hands were quickly on the scene and succeeded in saving a portion of the furniture. The Brigade's efforts were hampered through the absence of water, and there is no doubt that had an efficient supply been available the fire would have been extinguished in its incipient stage. A bucket brigade prevented the fire from spreading to the adjoining house. The building was insured in the National for £150 Mr Rusden had only a small policy on his furniture, and consequently is a heavy loser. A piano and Singer sewing machine were among tbe items destroyed. The fire is supposed to have originated through some clothes which were airing taking fire and igniting the paper of the walls of the room.
