» Japs' Advance Retarded by Bad Roads. Another Russian Defeat. Telegraph. Press Association. Copyright .London, May 19. The Japanese advanced to the south of Li&oyang, and delayed two days, while awaiting their heavy artillery, which, owing to the terrible state of the roads, retarded the army. The advance was resumed on the 18th. General Oka reports that the railway has been cut in five places north of Port Arthur, between the sth and the 17th instant. Hundreds of Chinese and Russian refugees from Dalny, have reached Ghefoo. They report that an attempt was made to destroy the docks and piers at Dalny, but they were unsuccessful, though the iron pier at Talienwan was wrecked. \The Japanese, on the 16th, after serious fighting, drove a battalion of Russians with eight guns off a line of hills at Chakato to Chulisan, near Kincb.au. The Russians retreated southwards. The Japanese casualties were 146, including nine officers wounded. Kuropatkin reports that there are five thousand Japanese sixteen kilometres south-east of Fenghuencbeng and mentions that smaller bodies are in the vicinity, which generally suggests the advance is less rapid than indicated from other sources.' /" The Japanese are constructing field works near Fenghuencheng.
