A destructive cyclone swept over the . city and a portion of the suburbs last night, doing an immense amount of . damage. | A terrific fall of hail occurred, the hailstones measuring an inch and a half > in diameter, some much larger. j During less than half an hour, which ; the cyclone lasted, the wind reached a velocity of 76 miles an hour but soon calmed. Thousands of windows, in all exposed positions, and skylights, were smashed. Telephone wires were broken, and trees stripped of leaves. : "The gntters^were blocked, and the water flooded many premises. At Maple Co.'s furniture factory, the wind unroofed one of the new buildings, and water caused damage to the extent of £2,000. The Royal Arcade is a scene of desolation, the skylights were riddled. The rain ruined many shops, the photographic studios being heavy suffer* ers. At Talma's studio the damage was | £500. At Cole's Book Arcade the estimate ruin of the books amounted to thousand* of pounds. " Much damage was also done to Mel* ville and Mull ins', booksellers, and the public library. The total losses in the city are estimated at £20,000.
