Apiti Notes.

Mr Taylor, tb6 Liberal candidate for the Raugitikei seat, addressed the electors of this district in Guy's Hall last Wednesday night, 22nd inst. " The hall was fairly well filled by an attentive audience. Mr Taylor's address, which lasted over an hour, was mainly a resume of those previously delivered at other centres in the electorate, His remarks were well received, and at thp >r - close of his speech questions were** invited. These were satisfactorily answered until the Marine Scandal cropped up, then the candidate's ire was raised, and he refused to answer any questions on the matter. Mr G. Bankin, Junr, presided and the meeting was brought to a close by a hearty vote of thanks to Mr Taylor for his address. On Friday night 24fch inst, another interesting meeting, bearing upon election matters, took place in the Hall, this beinV a debate between Messrs Guy and Knight, on the subject of Prohibition, Mr Guy doing battle for the Prohibitionists, and Mr Enight upholding the cause of the Anti-Pros. Mr G. Field presided over a fair audience which was quick to notice any good point scored, and applauded accordingly. Each speaker was allowed twenty minutes for attack and defence, and at the end of 40 minutes each the debate was closed. The combatants were well prepared and brought* out the several points in their arguments clearly and strongly, and it was difficult to tell which side would gain the victory. However, on a show of hands being taken, Prohibition was in favour by a large majority. Both speakers are to be congratulated upon the gentlemanly manner they fought their .respective causes, no personalities been ■ indulged in- This was a distinct feature of the debate and worthy of note, for it is often the case, that rude and uncalled-for personal remarks bring discredit on gatherings of this kind. A hearty vote of thanks to the Chairman closed the meeting.
