The Palmerston N. Arcade Auction Room.
Mr J. R. Montague is one of the residents of Palmerston who has every confidence in its future, and he has just given tho most practical proof of this by completing what is without doubt the largest auction room in tho Colony. The room in which Mr Montague has previously displayed his goods and held his sales was remarkable for its capacity, but he has just extended it to nearly twice its size. The building now measures 165 feet — 1h chains— in length by 33 feet in width, giving the enormous floor space of 5,445 feet, and, judging by the volume of business carried on, we shall not be surprised if even with this increase of room Mr Montague will find himself cramped for accommodation. To make room for his workmen the proprietor has erocted on the other side of the right of-way at the back of the Arcade (as tho auction room will in future be designated), a factory 70 x 32, with flax room 20 x 18, and timber sheds outside. The factory is fitted with all tho most suitable machinery, driven by a powerful gas engine. The material used in bed-making is treated by the new " sanitary bedding process," under which all kapoo, tow, fluclc, etc., is subject to the action of chemicals, the fumes of which destroy all laten germs. The extension of the auction room and the erection of the factory havo been carried out in a workmaulike and satisfactory manner. It is Mr Montague's intention to light tho whole of his premises with electricity, and he will shortly proceed to Melbourne to purchase tiie necessary machinery. We congratulate Mr Montague upon his enterprise, and upon the success which that enterprise denotes, and wish him every success in the future. Mr Montague is to celebrate the opening of the Arcade Auction Mait by a great unreserved sale of high class imported furniture. This includes three magnificent suites, of beautiful design, in Genoa velvet, and plush, and a fine opportunity will be presented by tho sale to obtain some roally high class furniture. The sale will be held on Saturday and Monday, and particular attention is directed to the fact that it will be an unreserved one. — Manawatu Times.
