A CONTRADICTION.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAR. Sir, — I hear that Colonel Bailey stated in a public meeting held at Feilding that Captain Stevens had for months previous to his resignation been negotiating with the Bible Christians to join them. Now, Sir, I must in justice to' Captain Stevens ask you to allow me to contradict such a statement. It seems to me that the Colonel has made the hasty statement on mere rumour, or he has been drawing freely from his own imagination. When they were in Dunedin resting, in January last, I came across them in Mrs Stevens' horns (her mother being a member of my church) and from the little conversation we had together on Christian work, I found both the Captain and his wife heartily and truly attached to their work as officers of the Army. Their resignation came upon me as a surprise, and fully convinced me something serious must have transpired or else they would not have left the work to which they had so heartily, heroically, and earnestly given their lives. Trusting you will insert this explanation as I am the only Bible Christian Minister that Mr Stevens has ever had conversation with. I am, etc., William Ready. Dunedin, July 20th, 1893.
