THE SALVATION ARMY.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAR. Sir, — Would you kindly insert this explanation to several statements, made by Colonel Bailey on the public platform in Feilding, in regard to ray resignation. One statement was " Captain Stevens had said that he wrote to me (Colonel Bailey) to say that he wanted his fare to Dunedin, which was a palpable lie." Now Sir, I put the correspondence before you, which took place between Colonel Bailey and myself in regard to finances. At the closing part of my resignation, I inserted the following appeal for help : " I shall be glad if you can assist us with a little financial aid as we stand greatly in need of it." Now in the first place Colonel Bailey would fain have the public to believe that he did not know where we should go after we resigned. He should have known the rules and regulations «ven as he expected me to know them ; for in General Booth's orders and regulations for field officers, in regard to officers resigning he says, '• It is only natural to expect that an officer when he resigns will go back to his (or her) home." It is also perfectly true that we were allowed to leave with only 9s sd. The £3 Is that Colonel Bailey said I had taken, and which I would give no account of to the Treasurer (but which I see has been contradicted by the Treasurer himself in the Feilding Stab and Rangitikei Advocate) was not Army funds, but given by the public especially for my travelling expences, after being refused help from the Colonel. The following is the reply in answer to my appeal for help. " As to financial help the Colonel agrees to your doing as much as possible out of the corps' funds, providing that the corps' liabilites are met. II But seeing that you leave of your men free trill and not with his consent he cannot do more," which I naturally took as a definite refusal ; after meet-, ing the liabilities of the corps the sum of 9s 5d remained. These letters would not have been published but for the position the Colonel's refusal placed me in. I am, etc., A. E. Stevens. Dunedin, July 21st, 1893.
